art.1 Purpose of the competition
The Trieste Contemporanea Committee announces the sixth
edition of the international design competition “Trieste
Contemporanea” with the objective of promoting the most
original expressions in design from the countries of central-eastern
Europe. The initiative is organised with the patronage of
the Central European Initiative (C.E.I.).
art.2 Theme and technique of the 2004 Competition: a functional
tableware item in blown glass
The 2004 edition of the competition is dedicated to blown
glass with the objective of stimulating the creative research
of new aesthetic and formal solutions in the field of contemporary
design within the specific tradition of the Muranese glassware
industry. The candidates wishing to take part in the competition
are asked to submit a project for any type of functional
tableware item, i.e. for use in setting out and displaying
food and drink for dining, to be executed using the blown
glass technique and eventual cold-crafting finishing techniques.
In order to emphasize the specific objectives of the competition,
projects for objects with a purely decorative function or
which require the glass to be crafted by means of moulds
(with the exception of basic moulds), will not be accepted.
art.3 Criteria for admission to the competition
The competition is open to all designers born in, or currently
citizens of, the countries adhering to C.E.I. (Albania,
Austria, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia,
Czech Republic, Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Hungary,
Italy, Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Slovak Republic,
Slovenia and Ukraine) and of Estonia, Germany, Latvia and
Lithuania.
If applying as a group, the majority of the group members
must be born in, or currently citizens of, the above stated
countries.
art.4 Terms of participation to the competition
* REGISTRATION: Enrolment to the competition is free of
charge. For the participation to be valid, candidates must
submit their projects, complete with the application form
(you can download it from this
website) duly filled out in each of its sections, to the
Trieste Contemporanea Committee ensuring these are received
by the given deadline. Groups are asked to submit only one
application form containing the details of the group-leader
and indicating, in the relevant section, the names and nationality/citizenship
of all group members.
*TERMS OF PROJECT PRESENTATION: Project are to be presented
on a maximum of 4 sheets, preferably using a 1:1 scale,
and must be accompanied by a description in Italian and/or
English (maximum one A4 sheet / 1500 strokes) and by the
application form. Projects must include all the information
necessary for the execution of the prototype. It may therefore
be advisable to present, where necessary, a detailed top
and side view of the object, in addition to the customary
front view and axonometric sketch.
Projects may be submitted also by e-mail in which case,
following the above terms of presentation, images should
be sent as .jpg files and texts in .rtf (rich text) format.
All submitted projects will be treated as fully confidential
and will under no circumstances be shown to third parties
– i.e. to anyone not belonging to the technical or examining
commission – before the closing date of the competition.
The Committee reserves the right to include the project
and the curriculum of the selected participants and of the
prize-winners in the publication documenting the competition.
To this end, applicants are asked to enclose with the application
form a short CV based on the model provided.
The Committee will not accept material on which any postal
charges are due. The material submitted will not be returned
but will be available for collection by the designer at
the offices of the Committee for 6 months after the awarding
ceremony.
*DEADLINE: Projects and accompanying materials must be delivered
to the Committee by 15 May 2004. For material sent by conventional
post, the date of postal franking will prevail.

art. 5 Hors concours participations
The Trieste Contemporanea Committee intends to invite hors
concours a group of designers to present a project responding
to the requirements of the theme and the technique described
in this announcement.
art.6 Technical and judging commissions
A Technical Commission consisting of experts from the Anfora
furnace, which will be in charge of executing the prototypes
in glass, and of the executive secretary of the competition
representing the Trieste Contemporanea Committee will assess
the compliance of the submitted projects with the requirements
of the competition, especially with regards to their technical
feasibility, and will draft a shortlist of accepted projects.
The shortlist will be available on the web-site www.tscont.ts.it
as of the beginning of June 2004.
The short-listed projects will subsequently be submitted
to the judging panel which will be composed by Attilia Dorigato
(Civici Musei Veneziani . Museo del Vetro), Franco Jesurun
(Trieste Contemporanea), Gaetano Mainenti (Academy of Fine
Arts of Venice), Marco Romanelli (Abitare magazine), Mare
Saare (Glass Department o the Academy of Fine Arts of Tallinn)
and will be presided by Gillo Dorfles.; the Commission will
meet in June 2004 with the purpose of selecting among the
accepted project those with most merit and will assign the
prizes according to the following criteria:
1. Originality and depth of conception
2. Clarity of presentation
3. Economic feasibility of serial reproduction on a commercial
scale.
art.7 Prizes
All selected and winning projects:
Execution of prototypes in glass, exhibition and publication.
One of the two exemplars expected to be executed will be
property of the authors
Best designer from Trieste, if any, among those selected:
CITY OF TRIESTE PLAQUE;
journey and accommodation in Murano during the execution
of the prototype in the furnace
Youngest designer among those selected:
BEBA PRIZE: Euro 1000;
journey and accommodation in Murano during the execution
of the prototype in the furnace; journey and accommodation
to attend the awarding ceremony
Best project:
TRIESTE CONTEMPORANEA DESIGN 2004 PRIZE: Euro 3000;
journey and accommodation in Murano during the execution
of the prototype in the furnace; journey and accommodation
to attend the awarding ceremony
art.8 Execution of the prototypes
In accordance with art.7 above, all selected and winning
projects will be executed in Murano (in two exemplars),
without using moulds other than those traditionally employed
in Murano, by the master glassblower Andrea Zilio who reserves
the right to apply technical modifications to the projects
when necessary for the execution of the object. All selected
designers will be allowed to be present during the execution
in glass and will, to this end, be supplied the furnace’s
work calendar.
The winners of the competition will be expressly invited
by the Trieste Contemporanea Committee to oversee the execution
of the prototype of their project.
art.9 Publication of competition results
The results of the competition will be published on the
web-site of Trieste Contemporanea (www.tscont.ts.it) as
of October 2004. The closing of the competition will be
marked by the publication of a special issue of the “Trieste
Contemporanea” magazine dedicated to the event. The magazine
is published twice-yearly and distributed internationally
and is also available in electronic format on the web-site
indicated above. The results of the competition will be
made public and circulated to international press and media
by the Committee.
art.10 Exhibition of selected and winning projects
All the glass prototypes made from the selected and winning
projects, as well as those presented by the invited hors
concours designers, in accordance with art.5 above, will
be exhibited in Italy and abroad under the care of the Trieste
Contemporanea Committee.
art.11 Copyrights
The designer of the object is, to all intents and purposes,
the owner of its copyright. Should any candidate wish to
protect their design through application for copyright or
for patent registration, they may do so before submitting
the project to the competition.
Unauthorised reproduction is forbidden.
The authors, whose projects will be developed in Murano,
cede the ownership of the prototypes which will be part
of the exhibitions to the Trieste Contemporanea Committee.
