How and by whom is contemporary visual art promoted in the countries of central eastern Europe? It was interesting - almost instinctive - to pose this as the first question to the commissioners of the national pavilions of the countries concerned, on the occasion of the opening of the 49th Venice Biennale. From the forum “The promotion of Art and Culture in central-eastern Europe” derives the dossier that Trieste Contemporanea now offers its readers hoping also they might contribute to broaden and deepen the debate. The dossier offers a synthesis of the answers to the various questions asked of those who participated in the first session of the round table, subsequently extended to other commissioners and curators whose statements have been reported in full, together with a number of thematic comments. It also reports the four-way discussion which made up the core of the second part of the meeting held at the Venice Academy of Fine Arts on June 5th 2001 under the patronage of CEI - the international organism that brings together the cultural commissions of the 17 member states of Central Europe. The subject of the discussion turned out to be highly topical and of notable importance because, despite the differences among the cases examined, it highlighted a series of common problems and difficulties which help in understanding the situation art is facing in these countries in the framework of their overall post-perestroika development and of the forthcoming accession to Europe of some of them.
And that is by no means all.
