In the complexity of the Kraus's work that inspires the film, the authors-directors identify two archetypal characters: the Optimist and the Pessimist, interpreted by a single actor.  The first one praises the war as a purification and stimulus for national cohesion.  The latter demolishes it by demonstrating its character of inhuman capitalist exploitation. The two bourgeois are protagonists of a large number of scenes in which the terrible character of the "modern" war is exposed.
